The Story and History of the Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental Airport
1938 The airport was built in Hessental for the German Air force.

1966 The Ministry of the Interior Baden-Württemberg grants approval to the Flight-and Workgroup Schwäbish Hall (FAG) for usage of the U.S. Army aerodrome - limited to motorized aircraft up to 2,500 kg.

1981 Joint usage agreement between Schwäbisch Hall e.V. Flying Club and the U.S. Army, Europe. Creation of aerodrome rules of usage.

1988 To increase safety standards an Instrument Landing System (ILS) is put in operation for use by American and German pilots. The ILS is a donation to the U.S. Army.

1992 Notification of U.S. Army departure from the Dolan Barracks.
The president of the Flying Club Schwäbisch Hall e.V., Mr. Reinhold Würth, together with the city of Schwäbisch Hall and the Fraction of the communal councillor of the Regional Administrative Authority start an initiative to continue airport operations.

1993 Approval process of the aerodrome Schwäbisch Hall begins according to VFR and IFR traffic regulations.

1994 Begin of runway renovation on October 1st. Certification by the Regional Administrative Authority Stuttgart on October 22nd. On May 25th approval is granted for large scale reconstruction and the first airspace “F” is established in Germany, which allows for IFR flight.

1998 Compilation of project and development plan for the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), hangars, aprons, and tie down areas by the Flugplatz Schwäbisch Hall GmbH. Planning begins for the turning of the runway and making it usable for aircraft up to 20.000 kg according to the requirements of JAR-OPS 1 (Joint Aviation Requirement for Operations).

2002 Completion of aprons with taxiway to aircraft hangars, accessibility to the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and fire truck.

2003 Purchase of the aerodrome compound (aprox. 79 ha) by the city of Schwäbisch Hall through the Würth Property Management Company.
Public discussion forum held concerning the official approval plan with the Regional Administrative Authority Stuttgart.

2004

Resolution of official approval plan in February. Public announcement of the construction plans. Construction begins in May - First landing on the new runway on August 24th 2004. Construction is completed end of October. (A runway length of 1540 meters, turned to 28/10)
In October operations begin at the all-weather airport in the newly arranged airspace “F”.
On December 1st the new aviation maintenance facility is opened in Hessental.


2005 Completion of a new aircraft hangar (2.400 m²).

2006 Purchase of a new fire truck that holds 5,700 lit. (ICAO Cat 5) Aircraft up to 40 tons MTOM (max 60 passengers) can now be handled.

2007   Construction of a new aircraft hangar (2,000 m²) and expansion of the aviation maintenance facility.                
 
2008   The opening of a Daimler Cirrus Aviation headquarters at the Adolf                  Würth Airport. A private hanger, large enough for four Citation Jets                  and an office building celebrated its grand opening in April.
